I basically took this from a letter response in May's GameInformer that stood out to me.
I promise not to have an opinion too often ;P

Nice take on Man Card. In my books:
Gamer = Anyone who habitually plays any number of computer software generally recognized as games, and have some knowledge about the objective and means to play the games.
Competitive Gamer = Any Gamer who habitually, earning money or not, plays games against other players or teams in arranged competitions or matches, with sportsmanship associated to the spirit of competition.
Professional Gamer = Any Gamer who habitually interacts with games in a professional manner, be it participating in clan games, selling items, writing reviews, writing walkthroughs, broadcasting, etc., with monetary reward as primary motivation.
Amateur Gamer = Any Gamer who habitually engages in same activities as Professional Gamers, but without the motivation in Professional Gamer.
The key point is "habit". You can't win one Gamer Cup, quit, and still call yourself a Gamer. You have to keep playing. There, that's my definition of gamer and gaming, in a non-judgmental manner. No casual or hardcore here. It just depends on the purpose of your activities.
